At Junior Cycle students explore English over a wide variety of topics including:

Media Studies




There are three levels at Junior Cycle: Higher, Ordinary and Foundation.

At Senior Level the course is certainly more exam focused.

Comparative Study

The course is certainly more analytical at Senior Cylce and students are actively encouraged to read for pleasure.

There are two levels at Leaving Certificate: Higher and Ordinary.

English and Communications is compulsory for Leaving Certificate Applied students.

There is a strong emphasis on communications with all sections of the course focusing on the importance of communications. The four main areas of study within English and Communications are:

Communications and the Working World

Communications and Enterprise

Critical Literacy

Media Studies


Student knowledge is reinforced with out-of-classroom experience like trips to the theatre or the cinema, debating club, and regular competition entry. There is also a strong emphasis on literacy in the Donahies, so initiatives like the Reading Challenge, Word of the Week, Key Word Noticeboards and the Spelling Bee all enhance student learning. All students are members of the school library.
